Fugitive Child Molester Sentenced in 1990 Case:"After nearly 20 years on the run, a child molester is brought to justice in Brazos County.
Richard High, 59, was sentenced to 10 years in prison Monday after pleading guilty to indecency with a child.
High was originally arrested in 1990 for fondling a 3-year-old boy at a friend's Brazos County home. But after high posted bail, he vanished.
Authorities continued to hunt for the fugitive in the years that followed. The break they'd been hoping for came in July 2009, when a resident in Avilla, Indiana reported that a neighbor (High) was behaving suspiciously around young boys. Avilla police begin looking into High's background where they learned he was wanted in Brazos County.
After his arrest in Indiana, High refused extradition. But the Brazos County District Attorney's office was able to to produce enough witnesses and evidence to get the Governor to sign an order forcing High to return.
'We are very happy with the sentence in this case,' said Ray Thomas, Assistant District Attorney. 'Given the amount of time that High was on the run, we were still able to contact the officers involved, the victim in this case, as well as other necessary witnesses. As a result, we were able to ensuree that justice was done.
High was extradited back to Brazos County in September 2009, where he has remained jailed awaiting trial."
Hats off to the Law enforcement in this little town. I am glad they caught the guy, but it is terrible that he avoided arrest for 20 years. I would expect the law enforcement to be better then that. This evil man probably harmed a lot of little boys. I am glad this man was caught. The true hero in this story though is the resident that lives in Avilla. They had a watchful eye, and knew something wasn't right. We need more people like the hero in this story. We need more people to stand up for the rights of children. Adults in this world has a responsibility toward children. The responsibility is to protect children. It is our job to watch over them, to keep them safe. Adults have to remember that children look up to us. We are the people that they turn out to be. I call upon all the adults who read this blog, to watch out for children. Watch out for all children, not just your own. Keep a watchful eye, because you never know when a child might need your help.
